TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Sustainable development has become a global trend. Corporations worldwide have set up departments dedicated to environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) and they are looking to comply with the framework.

According to a local job bank, there were 2,000 job openings related to ESG goals as of December 2022. ESG sustainability managers, carbon footprint management specialists, greenhouse gas inventory managers, and green power planning specialists are among the positions job seekers can find in this field.

"The main job of a sustainable manager is to understand the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations, and in accordance with laws and regulations, assist enterprises to formulate relevant sustainable development plans according to their needs," said Chen Yi-rou, director at a job bank.

Chen added that "Taiwan's investment in ESG is currently dominated by large-scale enterprises, so it will be more competitive in terms of salary."

However, experts say those interested in a career in sustainable development need to be skilled in the related area in order to stand out.

Although having foreign language skills and the ability to write plans gives interested applicants an opportunity to switch to sustainability-related jobs, experts also say meeting the professional capabilities of the various industries is also a required skill to successfully make a transition.
