ITRI and TSMC are partnering to develop a SOT-MRAM array chip with lower power consumption and faster operation than STT-MRAM. The new design has potential applications in in-memory computation and is expected to advance the field of high-speed semiconductors. The General Director of ITRI’s Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories, Chang Shih-chieh, highlighted the chip’s low power consumption and quick 10-nanosecond operating time, which enable improved computational efficiency and expand the potential applications beyond traditional memory-oriented scenarios. The research results were presented at the IEDM, showcasing the technology’s potential for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and automotive chips. Additionally, ITRI’s focus on non-volatile memory technologies demonstrates their commitment to pushing the boundaries of the domestic semiconductor markets and exploring new areas of application.

Taiwan aims to leverage its information and communication technology (ICT) and semiconductor industries to gain a competitive advantage in international markets. The Ministry of Economic Affairs Minister, Wang Mei-hua, witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards (TAICS) and the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA), signaling a new era of cooperation. With the global smart manufacturing market projected to reach US$140 billion by 2030, Wang believes Taiwan is well-positioned to integrate 5G into smart factories due to its existing experience and infrastructure. Taiwan aims to align its 5G application standards with global benchmarks and contribute its knowledge to international organizations. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is supporting the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in developing new technologies and collaborating with Taiwanese companies to establish a voice within the global 5G community through 5G-ACIA. This strategic partnership is expected to position Taiwan as a leader in next-generation industrial technology and solidify its role in the information and communication technology sector on the global stage.

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) to collaborate on semiconductors, net zero emissions, biotech and medicine, and startups. The aim is to leverage complementary strengths to achieve mutual benefits. ITRI President Edwin Liu highlighted the cultural and professional parallels between Taiwan and Japan, emphasizing the potential for a win-win situation. Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu expressed interest in biotech, medicine, and startups, and looked forward to further international cooperation. Both institutes shared their respective advances in clean energy and green transition. The partnership is strategic as Tokyo Tech prepares to merge with Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), offering opportunities for expansion into the biomedical field. The collaboration will be deepened through technical symposiums and sharing of research outcomes, setting a benchmark for international research partnerships.

The total semiconductor industry output is projected to reach NT＄4.3 trillion in 2023, with a year-on-year decrease of 11.2%, according to a revised forecast by Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Investment Corporation (ITRI). The wafer foundry industry is expected to have an output value of NT＄2.46 trillion, surpassing the earlier forecast of NT＄2.38 trillion, and showing an 8.2% yearly decrease. The semiconductor manufacturing industry, including wafer foundry and DRAM, is set to have an output value of NT＄2.64 trillion, with a year-on-year decrease of 9.6%. TSMC’s operational growth is likely to contribute to an anticipated 8.1% growth in Taiwan’s semiconductor manufacturing output in the fourth quarter.

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has announced an 8.6 percent rebound in output, driven by developments in solar and wind power. Taiwan’s renewable energy market is expected to reach NT$200 billion in 2024. This was revealed during an ITRI industry forum that focused on cross-discipline cooperation in carbon solution exchange. Jay Wang, Vice Director of ITRI Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center, highlighted the challenges faced by the global economy due to high inflation and interest rates, which have increased investment costs for renewable energy development. Wang emphasized the importance of renewable energy in achieving a net-zero economy by 2050, but noted that oversupply has resulted in lower prices and the need for different approaches. Despite these challenges, Taiwan has excelled in the development and innovation of renewable energy, particularly offshore wind power, with an accumulated capacity of 2GW to date.
