TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Prosecutors used 3D laser scanning technology Wednesday (Dec. 24) to reconstruct the crime scene where a knife attacker killed four people near Taipei Main Station (台北車站) on Dec. 19. Chief Prosecutor Tseng Yang-ling (曾揚嶺) led a 16-member forensic team deploying advanced scanning equipment to map the suspect's attack route. The 27-year-old suspect surnamed Chang (張) killed four people and injured 11 in a random stabbing spree across multiple locations.
The 3D laser scanner captures spatial and environmental coordinates with a scanning range of up to 150 meters (492 feet) and processes 2 million data points per second, according to Taipei police. Tseng and his team focused their investigation on Taipei Main Station, Taiwan's busiest transportation hub, around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The advanced technology allows investigators to create precise digital reconstructions of crime scenes for detailed evidence analysis and eventual court presentations.
The 16-member team included Taipei City Criminal Investigation Division Chief Lu Chun-hung (盧俊宏) and Zhongshan Precinct Chief Chang Yao-jen (張耀仁), who mapped the suspect's attack route. Authorities found Chang's written murder plan but have not determined his true motive for the random killings. Prosecutors hope the 3D reconstruction will uncover additional evidence about why Chang fled from Taipei Main Station to Zhongshan Station (中山站) before attacking shoppers at Eslite Nanxi Store (誠品南西店), a popular bookstore and shopping complex. ◼
