TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) hosted a banquet Thursday (Oct. 16) for a visiting delegation from the Center for American Progress (美國進步中心), a public policy research and advocacy organization which presents a liberal viewpoint on economic and social issues. The delegation included former board chair Thomas A. Daschle, a former U.S. Senate majority leader.
Lin emphasized Taiwan's commitment to increasing defense spending to demonstrate resolve for self-defense. Lin also highlighted challenges posed by authoritarian regimes through cognitive warfare against democratic systems in a Facebook post. He asserted Taiwan and the United States should join hands to safeguard democracy and foster prosperity. Lin noted Taiwan's dedication to regional peace and its pivotal role in semiconductor industries, expressing eagerness to deepen U.S. cooperation.
Daschle, quoting President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) National Day speech, remarked Taiwan surpassed its martial law era in days of democratic governance as of September. He praised Taiwan's healthcare system and economic vitality, acknowledging the over 50-year friendship between Taiwan and the U.S. The former senator credited this enduring partnership as a significant contributor to Taiwan's achievements. ◼
