TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (陸委會), the government body overseeing China relations, announced Wednesday (Oct. 1) it will monitor Taiwanese artists' social media posts that potentially diminish Taiwan or promote military aggression. The warning follows several Taiwanese entertainers in China posting congratulations to the "motherland" on China's National Day. Officials urged artists to cherish Taiwan's democratic freedoms and support the Republic of China's prosperity.
Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) emphasized deepening cross-strait exchanges during a reception marking the People's Republic of China's 76th anniversary. Xi firmly opposed Taiwan's independence while defending China's territorial integrity claims. The Chinese leader's remarks coincided with Taiwan's heightened scrutiny of entertainers' National Day posts.
Several Taiwanese artists working in China shared Chinese state media posts congratulating the "motherland" and "new China," raising legal concerns with Taiwan authorities. Actor Nicky Wu (吳奇隆) celebrated China's National Day Wednesday, while actress Nana Ou-yang (歐陽娜娜) notably refrained from posting congratulations. The contrasting responses drew widespread attention across social media platforms.
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨), Taiwan's ruling party, spokesperson Han Ying (韓瑩) reaffirmed President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) position on engaging China under equal dignity. Han reiterated the DPP's commitment to healthy cross-strait relations while emphasizing China's suppression of Taiwan as the primary obstacle. The spokesperson highlighted Beijing's attempts to alter the regional status quo.
