TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) confirmed Tuesday (Sept. 2) her arrival in Beijing the previous night to attend China's military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan on Sept. 3. Hung described her participation as tribute to ancestors who fought in the war. The controversial visit comes amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and mainland China.
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會), Taiwan's cabinet-level agency overseeing cross-strait relations, announced penalties for political parties, legal entities, civic groups, or individuals attending the event with mainland authorities. The MAC emphasized prohibitions against central and local government officials attending the parade or related events led by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP, 中國共產黨). Officials cited the Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area.
The council urged citizens to unite in defending national sovereignty and dignity while warning against participation in the CCP's official activities. The MAC reiterated that violators would face legal consequences under Taiwan law. Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) revealed he would not attend the event, while KMT legislator Lin Szu-ming (林思銘) stated that Hung does not represent the party's official position. ◼
