TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Education (教育部) announced Friday (Sept. 19) that over 50,000 indigenous students have received scholarships since 2018. The Outstanding Indigenous Student Scholarship (優秀原住民學生獎學金) program allocates NT$21.15 million (around US$700,900) annually. The funding supports academically excelling indigenous elementary, junior high, and high school students across Taiwan.

Scholarship applicants must possess indigenous status and avoid receiving similar funding in the same semester. Students cannot have disciplinary records beyond minor demerits to qualify for the program. High school applicants must maintain GPAs in their class's top 30% and pass all academic subjects.

Stella Maris Ursuline High School (花蓮縣私立海星高中) in Hualien County reported 67 students received scholarships last semester. Principal Chen Hai-peng (陳海鵬) said the program helps indigenous students reduce family financial burdens and improve academic performance. The school will continue encouraging student applications for the scholarship program. ◼
