TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A typhoon is likely to form east of the Philippines and potentially affect Taiwan next week, meteorologist Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) warned Tuesday (Sept. 16). The storm is expected to pass north of Luzon Island and through the Bashi Channel, a strategic waterway between Taiwan and the Philippines, impacting Taiwan with peripheral circulation effects.
Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) noted that the tropical disturbance, identified as 99W, has a 70% chance of developing into a typhoon and poses a significant threat to Taiwan. Chia Hsin-hsing forecasted scattered showers in regions north of Taoyuan, Yilan, and Hualien on Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 afternoons, while southern areas like Tainan (台南) and Taitung (台東) may also experience rain.
Chia added that rain is likely from Taitung to Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan's southernmost point, on Wednesday (Sept. 17), with sporadic showers in southern mountain areas. He also mentioned that Hualien and Taitung, along with Kaohsiung and Pingtung, could see rainfall on Sept. 23, with Chiayi, Tainan, Taoyuan, and Yilan expecting brief showers.
Scattered showers could affect Hualien, Taitung, and southern Pingtung on Thursday (Sept. 19) and Friday (Sept. 20), with an increased chance of heavy rain in Taitung and Pingtung counties. Brief afternoon showers are also anticipated south of Taoyuan and in Hualien and Taitung. Rainfall is expected to persist from Saturday (Sept. 21) to Sept. 22 in Pingtung, Taitung, and from the north coast to the northeast corner, urging residents to stay alert. ◼
