AI demand propels Taiwan to dramatically higher growth target (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's artificial intelligence boom has propelled the island's semiconductor industry to unprecedented heights during the third quarter, driving Cathay Financial Holdings (國泰金控) to dramatically revise economic growth projections upward. The AI-driven surge has fueled Taiwan's export competitiveness beyond all expectations, positioning the island as a critical player in the global technology revolution.

Taiwan's leading financial services group announced Monday (Sept. 15) that surging AI applications have led semiconductor and electronics production to sustained mass output levels, contributing to the dramatic upgrade of Taiwan's 2025 economic growth forecast from 2.8% to 4.5%. The revision represents one of the most significant upward adjustments in recent years for Taiwan's export-dependent economy.

Cathay Financial Holdings stated in its third-quarter Taiwan Economic Climate and Financial Conditions report that AI trends continue to support semiconductor and electronics demand for sustained mass production. The AI-driven surge combined with a tariff exemption period that encouraged front-loading of exports has pushed Taiwan's economic growth beyond expectations, according to the financial institution's analysis.

Taiwan's semiconductor sector, which includes global chip manufacturing giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (台積電), has emerged as a critical beneficiary of the global AI revolution sweeping through technology markets. The industry currently maintains exemption from U.S. tariffs, providing a competitive advantage as companies worldwide rush to secure AI-capable processors and related components for their operations.

Cathay Financial Holdings assessed Taiwan's economic climate as improving from "rainy" to "sunny" for the third quarter, representing a significant upgrade from earlier predictions that conditions would hover between "cloudy" and "rainy." This unique meteorological rating system reflects the island's robust economic momentum amid persistent global uncertainties and trade tensions.

Challenges loom ahead for Taiwan's economic outlook, however. The financial services company projected Taiwan's economic climate will shift from "sunny" to "cloudy" in the fourth quarter with a probability exceeding 65%, as tariff exemption periods end and companies complete their front-loading activities across various sectors.

The AI boom's impact extends far beyond immediate export gains for Taiwan's economy. Taiwan's stock market has repeatedly hit record highs recently, buoyed by strong AI demand, reduced concerns about former President Donald Trump's (川普) tariff policies, and growing expectations of Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate cuts.

Taiwan's Central Bank (台灣央行), the island's monetary policy authority, is expected to maintain unchanged interest rates in September, reflecting the economy's robust momentum despite global uncertainties. The central bank's monetary policy decisions primarily depend on tariff impacts and economic growth trajectories affecting the island's export-driven economy.

Cathay Financial Holdings issued its first projection for 2026, forecasting 2% growth while citing potential negative impacts from ending tariff exemptions and elevated baseline comparisons. The sustainability of AI and robotics applications in driving continued technology investment and industrial transformation remains a key factor for Taiwan's long-term economic competitiveness in global markets.

The AI-semiconductor nexus has positioned Taiwan as an indispensable player in the global technology supply chain, cementing the island's strategic importance in the digital economy. Maintaining this competitive advantage will require successfully navigating evolving trade policies and sustaining innovation momentum across Taiwan's technology sectors. ◼
