TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislator Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) declared Friday (Sept. 5) that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Chiu Yi-ying's (邱議瑩) indictment represented "delayed justice for good-hearted Taiwanese." Taipei prosecutors indicted Chiu Thursday (Sept. 4) for public insult after she slapped Lo during a 2024 legislative session. The incident marked a significant escalation in Taiwan's often contentious parliamentary proceedings.
Taipei District Court ordered Chiu to pay Lo NT$200,000 (around US$6,557) in damages, which he plans to donate to a Kaohsiung recall group. Lo suggested the donation might help reduce Chiu's "bad karma" while criticizing the DPP as a "party of violence." He labeled Chiu a repeat offender, citing her previous confrontations including slapping legislator Lee Ching-hua (李慶華) and kicking the Ministry of Justice's (法務部) office door, calling her potential Kaohsiung mayoral candidacy "absurd."
Chiu issued an apology following her indictment, acknowledging her actions were wrong and expressing willingness to accept responsibility. She specifically apologized to Lo, stating that as a public representative, she should have set a positive example but instead provided the wrong demonstration. Despite the controversy surrounding her conduct, Chiu emphasized her continued commitment to public service, pledging to humbly improve while remaining dedicated to her legislative mission. ◼
