TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's weather agency issued alerts Monday (Sept. 1) as meteorologists warned of heavy afternoon rains approaching the island through Thursday (Sept. 4). The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) cautioned residents in western regions and eastern mountainous areas to prepare for an unstable cold-core low system moving toward Taiwan. The weather pattern threatens to bring significant precipitation across multiple regions of the island nation.
Weather officials attributed the atmospheric instability to the Pacific high-pressure system's weakening and eastward retreat, intensifying afternoon convection patterns above Taiwan. The Taiwan Typhoon Forum (台灣颱風論壇｜天氣特急), a meteorological analysis group, confirmed that the retreating Pacific high has increased tropical disturbance activity across the region. This shift in weather patterns creates conditions favorable for storm development and heavy precipitation events.
Meteorologist Wu Sheng-yu (吳聖宇) predicted that tropical disturbance 95W southeast of the Philippines would intensify into a tropical depression or typhoon. The weather system could pass east of Taiwan toward Japan Monday (Sept. 1) or Tuesday (Sept. 2), Wu explained. Another concerning development involves a potential secondary system forming within the monsoon trough southwest of the initial disturbance, which could directly impact southern and southwestern Taiwan regions. ◼
