TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan faces potential trade penalties as the U.S. Department of Commerce announced Wednesday (Aug. 27) anti-dumping and countervailing duty determinations targeting corrosion-resistant steel products from 10 countries. The decision affects US$2.9 billion (around NT$88.5 billion) worth of imported goods from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. The ruling represents a significant escalation in U.S. trade enforcement affecting Taiwan's steel industry.

U.S. officials determined that corrosion-resistant steel products from the affected countries involve unfair dumping practices or government subsidies that undercut American competitors. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade William Kimmitt stressed the need for fair competition in global markets. The ruling carries particular weight because these steel products serve critical sectors including automotive manufacturing, appliance production, and construction industries across the United States.

The International Trade Commission (USITC), an independent federal agency, will now review the case to determine final penalties. The Commerce Department will impose anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders if the USITC confirms that imports have injured American steel producers and workers. This latest action highlights escalating U.S. trade enforcement measures and Washington's continued efforts to shield domestic manufacturing from foreign competition. ◼
