TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) endorsed Taipei City Deputy Mayor Lee Shu-chuan (李四川) Tuesday (Aug. 19) for the 2026 New Taipei mayoral race, praising his extensive administrative experience and dedication to public service. Huang emphasized that Lee's participation would significantly benefit New Taipei City, Taiwan's most populous municipality with over four million residents. This cross-party endorsement signals potential coalition-building ahead of the crucial municipal election cycle.

The TPP chairman conducted grassroots campaigning in Zhonghe and Yonghe districts to promote the referendum on extending the No. 3 Nuclear Power Plant's operational lifespan. Huang outlined his continued political outreach schedule, planning campaign activities across Taipei City Thursday and Friday to build momentum for the nuclear energy initiative. These densely populated suburban areas represent crucial constituencies in Taiwan's ongoing energy policy debates.

Lee acknowledged Tuesday the wealth of young talent within the Kuomintang (KMT) Taiwan's largest opposition party and suggested capable candidates should pursue electoral opportunities if they can secure victory. However, the deputy mayor indicated his readiness to enter the race if circumstances require his involvement next year. Huang outlined his methodical approach to presenting future policy plans to New Taipei citizens while expressing respect for the KMT's internal democratic candidate selection process.

Huang emphasized the significance of the approaching KMT chairmanship election and extended his best wishes for a successful democratic process within Taiwan's opposition party. The TPP leader assured that regardless of whether current chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) retains his position or another candidate assumes leadership, the Taiwan People's Party would respect the electoral outcome. This diplomatic stance reflects Huang's commitment to inter-party cooperation in Taiwan's democratic political landscape. ◼
