Opposition Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨), Taiwan's largest opposition party, legislators have demanded cabinet firings from President Lai's administration. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) suggested Monday (Aug. 18) that President Lai should appoint Pegatron (和碩) Chairman Tzu-Hsien Tung (童子賢) to his cabinet. The technology executive, who actively campaigned to recall KMT legislator Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁) during the July 26 elections, attended Tuesday's ceremony and was observed greeting the president personally.
Taiwan's political tradition dictates that ruling party setbacks typically trigger cabinet resignations as accountability measures. The July 26 recall elections targeted 24 KMT legislators and Hsinchu's mayor through campaigns led by civic organizations with backing from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Taiwan's governing party. Despite widespread political mobilization, every single recall attempt ultimately failed to achieve the required voter threshold for success.
