TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan braces for scorching temperatures through Sunday (Aug. 17) as meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) from National Central University (NCU, 中央大學) predicts clear skies and intense heat. Wu warned that tropical disturbances forming southeast of Taiwan and in the South China Sea could potentially threaten the region. Current models suggest minimal impact on the island.

Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued high-temperature warnings for six major cities and counties Thursday (Aug. 15), with thermometers expected to climb above 36 degrees Celsius (97°F). The European weather model indicates the Pacific high-pressure system will weaken from Sunday (Aug. 18) through Wednesday (Aug. 21). This shift promises increased moisture and stronger afternoon thunderstorms across Taiwan.

Wu stressed the importance of tracking a South China Sea tropical disturbance that could strengthen into a typhoon within three days. European and American weather models project the system will move northwest toward Hainan Island, reducing Taiwan's risk exposure. A separate disturbance southeast of Taiwan should drift northward harmlessly, though Wu recommended continued monitoring given forecasting uncertainties.
