TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌), chairman of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨), announced Monday (Aug. 11) his candidacy for the New Taipei City mayoral race in 2026. The TPP leader emphasized his intent to be the best option for voters during a live-streamed YouTube program. Huang outlined plans for a comprehensive campaign and expressed commitment to open dialogue with the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨), Taiwan's main opposition party.
Huang expressed openness to collaborating with other opposition parties to support a single, strong candidate, stating he never rejected this strategic approach. The Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 台灣民眾黨) confirmed Sunday (Aug. 10) during its party congress that it would maintain its two-year term rule for legislators. Huang's current term as a legislator will consequently conclude February 1, 2026, clearing the path for his mayoral campaign.
Huang feels well-versed in legislative procedures, inquiries, bills, and budgets despite serving as a legislator for just over five years. The TPP chairman believes this experience prepares him for a crucial position in the upcoming electoral battle for New Taipei City leadership. He candidly acknowledged that the more significant battleground lies in securing executive power, with his sights firmly set on the 2026 local elections. ◼
