TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A survey conducted by Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation (TPOS, 台灣民意基金會) unveiled a dramatic shift in public sentiment following the results of the first wave of the 726 recall. The number of supporters has plummeted by 2 million, while opposition has surged by over 2.6 million, creating a stark political landscape in Taiwan.
Survey data reveals that 24% of respondents somewhat oppose and 37.4% completely oppose the recall, with opposition outweighing support by nearly 30%. Yu Ying-lung (游盈隆), chairman of TPOS, noted that the mainstream opinion against the recall is growing stronger, reflecting the political consequences of the 726 recall. Compared to last month, support for the recall has decreased by 10 percentage points, and opposition has increased by 13.4 percentage points. The gap between opposition and support now stands at five times last month's figures, indicating a dramatic shift in the political attitudes of the Taiwanese public.
The Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation commissioned Focus Survey Research (山水民意研究公司) to conduct this survey from Aug. 4 to 6, targeting adults aged 20 and above nationwide. Using a dual-frame sampling method, the survey employed 70% landline and 30% mobile calls, achieving 1,079 valid samples with a sampling error of about ±2.98 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. The survey results, weighted according to the latest Ministry of the Interior (MOI, 內政部) population data.
