TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's former Finance Minister and Central Bank (CBC, 中央銀行) Deputy Governor Chiu Cheng-hsiung (邱正雄) passed away Wednesday (July 23) at age 83, friends confirmed. The veteran economist also served as deputy premier in Taiwan's cabinet and significantly influenced the island's economic policies throughout his distinguished career. His death marks the end of an era for Taiwan's financial sector.

Chiu built his reputation through extensive experience in finance and politics, holding several key positions within Taiwan's central bank, including Deputy Director General in the Department of Foreign Exchange and Department of Banking. His academic credentials included an economics degree from National Taiwan University (NTU, 國立臺灣大學) and a Ph.D. in economics from Ohio State University. These qualifications positioned him as a leading voice in Taiwan's economic circles.

Chiu's leadership extended beyond government service to include roles as Chairman of Antai Bank (安泰銀行) and Bank SinoPac (永豐銀行), two major financial institutions. He also served as an adjunct professor at NTU's Department of Economics and Finance, sharing his expertise with future economists. The financial and academic communities mourn his passing, recognizing his achievements including the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowship. ◼
