TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese swimmer Eddie Wang (王冠閎) claimed fifth place in the men's 100-meter butterfly final at the FISU World University Games in Germany Wednesday (July 23). The accomplished athlete clocked 52.18 seconds, coming tantalizingly close to his national record by just 0.15 seconds. The performance marked another strong showing for Taiwan's swimming program at the international competition.
Wang had initially aimed to break his national record and humorously remarked that his goal was not to finish last in the final. The achievement marked his first time reaching the 100-meter butterfly final at the World University Games. He had previously earned a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly, missing Taiwan's first-ever Universiade gold by a heartbreaking 0.26 seconds.
Wang has consistently performed well, winning medals in consecutive World University Games across multiple competitions. The veteran swimmer played a pivotal role in helping Taiwan's swimming newcomers relax during their international debut.
