TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's women's volleyball team dominated Australia in their opening match of the Rhine-Ruhr FISU World University Games on Wednesday (July 16). The squad secured a decisive victory with commanding set scores of 25-13, 25-10, and 25-18, establishing a powerful momentum for the Taiwan delegation at the international collegiate competition.
Coach Teng Yen-min (鄧衍敏) attributed the victory to meticulous pre-match preparation and strategic planning. "We found information on the Australian team and discussed it with the players before the game, which allowed us to control the pace," Teng explained. The tactical approach aligns with Taiwan's ambition to surpass its ninth-place finish in the previous World University Games and secure a position among the top eight competitors this year.
The tournament's group stage presents formidable challenges ahead, with powerhouse opponents including Italy and the United States awaiting the Taiwan squad. Teng voiced cautious optimism regarding Thursday's crucial matchup against Italy, urging his players to compete without intimidation. "This match was very important for the Taiwan delegation, and I am grateful for the players' efforts in securing a good start," Teng remarked. ◼
