TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) met Tuesday (July 22) with a cross-party delegation of Irish parliamentarians, emphasizing the potential for collaboration between Taiwan and Ireland in the semiconductor industry. He expressed hope for building what he termed a "non-red technology supply chain" together, referring to alternatives to Chinese technology networks. The meeting underscored Taiwan's efforts to strengthen democratic partnerships amid global technological competition.
Lai noted that Ireland's government outlined its vision in May to become a global semiconductor hub, aligning with Taiwan's industrial development goals. He said Taiwan possesses the world's most critical semiconductor ecosystem and looks forward to enhancing bilateral competitiveness with Ireland. The president emphasized constructing a value-based democratic economy that would strengthen both nations' technological capabilities and economic partnerships.
Deputy Speaker John McGuinness affirmed Ireland's ongoing commitment to strengthening ties with Taiwan, rooted in shared democratic values and common interests. McGuinness highlighted the presence of newly elected members in the delegation, representing the next generation of the Taiwan Friendship Group. These parliamentarians will continue collaborative efforts and firmly defend democratic principles between the two nations.
Lai thanked McGuinness and the delegation members for their support, emphasizing that Taiwan and Ireland serve as guardians of democratic and free values. McGuinness mentioned the challenges facing international trade and markets, stating Ireland's proactive contributions to democracy and trade to create greater welfare. He also remarked on the critical importance of artificial intelligence development, suggesting that Taiwan and Ireland could collaborate to ensure AI remains under human control.
