TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Lienchiang County Government (連江縣政府), the local administration governing Taiwan's remote Matsu Islands located just off China's coast, launched an evocative cultural initiative on Friday (July 18) inviting both Taiwanese citizens and international visitors to participate in the nostalgic "A Love Letter to Matsu" (寄給馬祖的情書) letter-writing campaign. County officials designed the program to encourage participants to document and reflect upon the Matsu archipelago's (馬祖) significant Cold War military history and its distinctive natural landscapes through personally crafted, heartfelt letters that capture individual connections to this historically strategic frontier region.
The county has distributed specially designed, limited-edition commemorative postcards to 42 strategic locations throughout Taiwan's main island, including high-traffic areas such as Taipei Main Station, the capital's central transportation hub, and Songshan Airport (松山機場), the domestic airport serving central Taipei with flights to the outlying islands. Prospective participants seeking eligibility for the contest prizes must complete their handwritten reflections on these official postcards and mail them directly to the Lienchiang County Government's administrative headquarters located at No. 76, Jieshou Village (介壽鄉), in Nangan Township (南竿鄉), Matsu's main population center.
County officials plan to review all submitted entries in September when a selection committee will identify three grand prize winners who will each receive complimentary round-trip air transportation from Taipei's Songshan Airport to Nangan Airport (南竿機場) in Matsu, complemented by a comprehensive collection of specially curated books about the islands' history and culture. The promotional campaign will also recognize 27 additional participants with honorable mention awards, each receiving a single volume from the county's selection of publications highlighting Matsu's distinctive heritage. ◼
