TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) issued a stern protest and condemnation against China on Friday (June 27) after Chinese diplomats allegedly followed and nearly caused a car accident involving Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) during her visit to the Czech Republic in March 2024. The MAC demanded an explanation and a public apology from China for the incident.
Hsiao traveled to the Czech Republic for a three-day visit, meeting with Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil. During the trip, Chinese diplomats reportedly followed Hsiao, with the Czech intelligence agency confirming that Chinese intelligence attempted disruptive actions against protected individuals. Czech media reported that these diplomats planned to collide with Hsiao's vehicle.
The MAC strongly condemned the deliberate attack by personnel from the Chinese embassy in the Czech Republic, highlighting China's disregard for Taiwan's public opinion and the violent threats against Taiwan's democratically elected vice president. The council stated that these actions reveal the violent nature of the Chinese Communist regime.
The MAC called on Beijing to immediately explain and apologize for this uncivilized act, which violated international norms and endangered personal safety. They urged the international community to join in condemning China's authoritarian expansion and demanded that China adhere to international standards, warning against becoming a global troublemaker.
