TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Executive Yuan (行政院) on Friday (June 27) released a survey showing that 69.9% of respondents now support the legalization of same-sex marriage, a significant increase from 37.4% before its legalization in 2018. The Department of Gender Equality (性別平等處) noted that support for same-sex couples' rights to marry and adopt children has grown, with 78% agreeing that same-sex couples should have adoption rights.
In terms of gender-based violence prevention, 93.4% of respondents disagreed with the notion that a woman's verbal refusal without physical resistance does not constitute harassment or assault. Additionally, 94.1% expressed willingness to report workplace harassment. The survey also highlighted that 94.7% disagreed with the stereotype that women are unsuitable for science and engineering fields, while 96.3% believed both spouses' opinions are equally crucial in household matters.
Despite these progressive views, traditional gender stereotypes persist. The survey found that 58.3% of respondents still consider women more suitable for childcare, a point underscored by the Department of Gender Equality. Regarding transgender rights, 91.5% expressed comfort working alongside transgender colleagues, reflecting respect and acceptance. However, opinions diverged on identity documentation changes, with nearly 60% supporting a third gender option on IDs but only 40.6% agreeing that transgender individuals should change their gender marker without surgery.
The survey, conducted from April 24-28, 2025, included 1,077 respondents aged 20 and above. As societal attitudes evolve, future surveys may reveal further shifts in public perception.
