TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a diplomatic push to elevate Taiwan's global environmental profile, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) departed for Paris on Thursday (June 19) heading a municipal delegation to participate in a high-profile climate summit. The "Summit of Mayors: From Paris to Belém: 10 Years of Global Action for Climate" commemorates a decade since the landmark Paris Agreement was signed, offering the Taiwanese capital a rare platform on the international stage. Chiang's attendance underscores Taipei's determination to engage in global climate initiatives despite Taiwan's complex diplomatic status.

During the Paris visit, Mayor Chiang has scheduled talks with Olivier Cadic, vice chairman of the French Senate's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, in a strategic move to bolster Taipei's international visibility. The mayor has highlighted the summit as a crucial opportunity to display Taipei's environmental innovations to a global audience. His agenda focuses on presenting the city's progress toward net-zero carbon emissions, sustainable urban planning initiatives, and an expanding network of green transportation options that have transformed urban mobility in Taiwan's most populous metropolitan area.

The mayor's itinerary extends beyond climate discussions to include municipal site visits and urban planning inspections throughout Paris, creating additional opportunities to showcase Taipei's cultural institutions and artistic heritage on an international platform. Chiang has expressed particular interest in promoting Taiwan's robust technology sector, which has emerged as a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing and digital innovation. These engagements reflect a broader diplomatic strategy to raise Taipei's international profile through soft power initiatives while fostering potential partnerships in environmental technology and sustainable urban development.

The overseas mission comes amid domestic political tensions involving the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨), Taiwan's main opposition party to which Chiang belongs, which is currently fending off a recall campaign against some of its elected officials. When questioned about the timing, the mayor emphasized that the climate summit had been scheduled well in advance and carries substantial diplomatic importance for the city. He assured constituents that he would maintain constant communication with his administrative team in Taipei throughout the trip. Political analysts view this international engagement as part of a deliberate strategy to establish Taipei as a forward-thinking hub for climate innovation and sustainable urban solutions in Asia. ◼
