TAIPEI (TVBS News) — EVA Air (長榮航空) joined the Turbulence Aware platform Sunday (June 1), strengthening global aviation safety initiatives through advanced turbulence data sharing. The Taiwan-based carrier announced this strategic move at the 81st International Air Transport Association (IATA, 國際航空運輸協會) Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, highlighting Taiwan's commitment to global flight safety standards. IATA's annual meeting serves as the premier forum for airline industry collaboration and policy development worldwide.
EVA Air Director Sun Chia-ming (孫嘉明) explained that the platform provides pilots and dispatchers with crucial real-time turbulence data. This technology enables flight crews to proactively plan alternative routes, avoiding areas with high turbulence probability and enhancing passenger safety. EVA Air's participation expands the platform to 28 participating airlines, creating a comprehensive network sharing data from over 2,700 aircraft globally. This extensive collaboration generates unprecedented real-time turbulence intelligence for the international aviation community.
The collaborative network empowers pilots to make immediate route adjustments upon encountering unexpected turbulence conditions. Real-time data sharing enables swift decision-making that prioritizes passenger comfort and aircraft safety during flight operations. EVA Air will initially deploy 33 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft as data collection contributors to the platform's reporting system. These wide-body aircraft will generate valuable turbulence intelligence across EVA Air's extensive international route network.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh highlighted the strategic importance of EVA Air's participation, noting its contribution to enhanced global crew capabilities. The collaboration promises improved safety standards, increased fuel efficiency, and superior passenger comfort across international aviation operations. IATA statistics reveal that participating airlines generated 51.8 million turbulence reports in 2024, representing a remarkable 35% increase from 2023. This substantial growth demonstrates the platform's expanding effectiveness in identifying and mitigating turbulence-related aviation risks.
