TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A diplomatic struggle over jurisdiction is unfolding as Cambodia prepares to deport 179 Taiwanese citizens accused of telecom fraud to China rather than their home territory. The Cambodia China Times (柬中時報), a local publication, reported Thursday (April 10) that Cambodian officials plan to send a total of 500 fraud suspects to mainland China on April 13, following a major police operation in Phnom Penh's (金邊市) Sangkat Srah Chak District that resulted in mass arrests on March 31.
Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau's International Criminal Affairs Division (刑事局國際科) has confirmed that diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the return of the Taiwanese nationals to their home jurisdiction. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) and Taiwan's de facto embassy in Cambodia, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, have initiated urgent negotiations to prevent the deportations to China. However, these efforts face significant challenges as the Cambodia China Times reported that Phnom Penh's authorities have established robust law enforcement cooperation with Beijing on transnational crime matters, with Chinese officials already arranging a special charter flight to transport all suspects to mainland territory.
