TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan has secured a place at the negotiating table with Washington as sweeping American tariffs on the island's exports take effect on Wednesday (April 9). U.S. President Donald Trump's administration implemented its previously announced 32% tariff on Taiwanese goods that day, exactly one week after the initial April 3 declaration that sent ripples through Asian markets. Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) also offered a measured response during a recent interview, disclosing that Taiwan has successfully positioned itself on the U.S. trade negotiation list and confirming that preliminary information exchange between the two economic partners is already underway.

The foreign minister signaled Taiwan's strategic approach to the negotiations, emphasizing that Taipei seeks a comprehensive economic dialogue rather than narrowly focused tariff relief. Lin outlined an ambitious negotiating agenda that incorporates investment commitments, procurement opportunities, and the dismantling of non-tariff trade barriers between the two economies. The seasoned diplomat highlighted Taiwan's substantial existing investments in critical American industrial sectors, particularly in advanced semiconductor manufacturing and natural gas development, positioning these contributions as potential balancing factors that could significantly reduce the persistent trade imbalance that has fueled U.S. protectionist measures.

Lin revealed that Taiwan's response mechanism had been promptly activated, with the Executive Yuan (行政院), Taiwan's cabinet having already completed a comprehensive inventory of potential concessions designed to address American concerns following the tariff announcement. This preparatory work encompasses concrete proposals for expanded investment commitments, enhanced procurement of American goods, and potential tariff reciprocity measures. The foreign minister characterized the current stage of discussions as an active information exchange phase, with Taiwanese officials awaiting additional economic data and policy parameters from their American counterparts to further refine their negotiating position.
