TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Amid growing consumer anxiety over looming price increases, Costco Taiwan (好市多) offered a measured response on Wednesday (April 9) to questions about how U.S. Costco's recent pricing adjustments might affect local stores. "We will continue to provide quality services to our members. Costco will take the initiative to inform our members of any service changes," the company stated, neither confirming nor denying immediate plans for price adjustments in Taiwan.
The concerns stem from a recent report by consumer publication EatThis,NotThat!, which revealed that U.S. Costco plans to increase prices on 13 specific products. The affected items span multiple departments, including major appliances like dishwashers and microwaves, along with popular food items such as imported rice and coffee. The report highlighted that numerous imported cheeses in Costco's selection, particularly premium varieties like Italian Parmesan and Spanish Manchego, currently face a 20% tariff and will likely see price adjustments implemented by summer.
The pricing pressure extends beyond cheese, with Mexican-manufactured refrigerators facing an even steeper 25% tariff according to the report. Even Costco's proprietary Kirkland Signature line, long considered a value alternative to national brands, may not escape the upcoming price adjustments. The publication detailed an extensive list of potentially affected items spanning multiple departments, including staples like olive oil and imported rice, specialty items such as exotic produce and foreign dry goods, popular commodities including imported coffee, and snack favorites like organic roasted seaweed and imported chocolate.
Despite the looming price pressures, Costco's global leadership maintains a confident outlook. During a second-quarter earnings call held Monday, CEO Ron Vachris projected optimism about the company's ability to navigate these market challenges. Vachris highlighted the retail giant's considerable global procurement capabilities and well-established supplier relationships as key advantages that would help Costco maintain its competitive pricing strategy. The chief executive reassured stakeholders that no major pricing overhauls or structural adjustments were currently planned, emphasizing instead the company's proven ability to innovate and address economic headwinds directly.
