TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of Transportation and Communication (MOTC, 交通部), Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱), expressed unwavering confidence on Wednesday (April 9) about the island nation's ability to achieve its ambitious 10 million visitor target for the year, even as concerns mount over the potential economic ripple effects from reciprocal tariffs recently imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The minister's optimistic outlook comes amid growing uncertainty in global trade relations that could potentially impact travel and tourism flows.

Chen emphasized that Taiwan's Tourism Bureau, the government agency responsible for promoting travel to the island, continues to carefully monitor and assess industry responses to these newly implemented tariffs. The minister pointed to encouraging first-quarter tourism statistics showing measurable increases in visitor arrivals, which he cited as evidence supporting the government's year-over-year growth projections. Despite this optimism, Chen candidly acknowledged potential vulnerabilities, warning that a broader economic downturn could adversely affect both the shipping industry and business travel sectors, with particular concern for potential declines in executive travelers utilizing Taiwan's high-speed rail network.

The transportation minister's comments follow a significant April 6 address by Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), who discussed strategies for expanding U.S. investments and procurement following Washington's announcement of imposing 32% tariffs on certain Taiwanese exports. This development has triggered concerns throughout Taiwan's aviation sector regarding potential disruptions to domestic airline procurement plans. Addressing these industry anxieties, Chen offered measured reassurance, clarifying that while specific plans remain in preliminary stages, Taiwan's airlines will likely adjust their purchasing strategies to increase procurement from American suppliers. The minister emphasized that both government policymakers and private industry stakeholders have established monitoring mechanisms to track relevant economic indicators as the complex trade situation continues to evolve.
