TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A fire broke out at the Taichung Power Plant (台中電廠) construction site on Friday (March 7), sending thick black smoke into the sky. Taiwan Power Company (TPC, 台電) reported that sparks from steel cutting ignited plastic templates during a gas project conducted by the contractor.
The Central Fire Brigade (中火消防隊) and the Taichung City Fire Bureau (台中市消防局), responded swiftly. They had extinguished the fire, preventing any impact on power supply operations. TPC confirmed no injuries occurred during the incident, and plant operations remained unaffected.
The Environmental Protection Bureau of Taichung City (台中市環保局) dispatched personnel to assess air pollution and determine liability. They will impose fines between NT$100,000 and NT$5 million under the Air Pollution Control Act once determining whether TPC or the contractor is responsible. Also, the Environmental Inspection Team (環保局環境稽查大隊) arrived promptly on site to measure pollution levels caused by the fire.
