TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) confirmed on Thursday (Feb. 13) that the suspected explosion at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store (新光三越) resulted in 4 deaths, 6 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA), 8 injuries, and 2 people trapped in an elevator.
The explosion rocked the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Taichung Zhonggang Store (新光三越台中中港店) in Xitun District (西屯區) on Thursday morning. In response to the incident, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) has instructed the National Fire Agency (消防署) under the Ministry of the Interior (內政部) to deploy rescue personnel promptly.
Cheng Ching Hospital Zhonggang Branch (澄清醫院) is continuing to treat other injured patients. As the investigation unfolds, firefighters continue the rescue operation. The casualties are climbing.
