TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR, 台灣高鐵) has rolled out an eco-friendly initiative to reduce plastic usage and boost energy efficiency. The company introduced pulp fiber cup lids and recycled headrest covers to tackle plastic waste. Elaine Tsou (鄒衡蕪), vice president of the Public Affairs Division, noted these items are 100% recyclable, potentially cutting plastic waste by 67 metric tons annually.

Tsou also emphasized enhancements in the train's interior, like new blackout curtains that boost light-blocking capacity from 67% to 95%, potentially lowering air conditioning energy consumption. THSR has advanced sustainability efforts by using recycled polyester fiber from PET bottles for uniforms and umbrella fabrics, recycling about 90 metric tons each year.

In March, THSR will broaden its recycling efforts by launching a shared umbrella program at 12 high-speed rail stations, collaborating with Taoyuan Metro (桃園捷運) and Taipei Metro (台北捷運). This initiative will include over 500 rental stations, offering recycled umbrellas from PET bottles collected at stations and on trains. These efforts represent a significant step toward sustainable operations for THSR, reflecting a broader commitment to environmental responsibility.
