TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Central Election Commission (CEC, 中選會) approved the first-stage proposals to recall 19 Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislators and the suspended mayor of Hsinchu City, Ann Kao (高虹安) on Thursday (Feb. 27). However, additional documents were required for the recall proposals of nine other legislators submitted afterward.
The CEC has received 64 recall proposals, including 54 targeting legislators, one against a city or county mayor, and nine against city or county councilors. Among the proposals, several KMT legislators and Kao were targeted by a civil group, which submitted their first-stage recall proposals on Feb. 3.
According to the "Public Officials Election And Recall Act" (公職人員選舉罷免法), the CEC must complete the review of proposals submitted then by Friday.
The CEC website indicates that proposals meeting the required threshold will prompt the CEC to request the lead proposer to collect the form for the list of endorsers within 10 days. If the proposals do not meet the threshold, proposers have one chance to resubmit.
