TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Tourism Administration (觀光署) reported a significant rebound in travel figures in February, with outbound travelers reaching 16.849 million, restoring 98.5% of pre-pandemic levels. Inbound visitors totaled 7.857 million, achieving 71% of pre-COVID-19 numbers. The administration aims to welcome 10 million visitors in 2025.

The administration data revealed that Japan emerged as the most popular destination for Taiwanese travelers, attracting approximately 6.006 million visits. China and Hong Kong-Macau followed with 2.77 million and 1.691 million visits, respectively. Conversely, most international visitors to Taiwan hailed from Japan, Hong Kong-Macau, and South Korea, with Japan leading at 1.319 million visitors.

The numbers highlighted Japan as the largest deficit nation due to currency fluctuations, which increased travel costs for Japanese tourists while making it more affordable for Taiwanese visitors. The Philippines, noted as the top surplus nation, contributed the most visitors from Southeast Asia. Tourism Administration Deputy Director-General Trust Lin (林信任) attributed this to the rapid economic development in the Philippines and the effectiveness of dual tourism ambassadors promoting Taiwan.

Taiwan also saw a notable increase in travelers to Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 48%, 35.1%, and 22.2%, respectively.
