TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Legislator Wu Chun-cheng (吳春城) announced his resignation from the Taiwan People's Party (民眾黨) on Tuesday (Feb. 25), amid investigations into allegations of profiteering and conflicts of interest. Wu's resignation follows reports of his involvement in securing NT$1.1 billion in government contracts through family businesses and registering the trademark "Strong Generation" (壯世代) after spearheading related legislation.
Wu, who led the proposal for the "Strong Generation Policy and Industry Development Promotion Act" (壯世代政策及產業發展促進法), faced accusations of benefiting from the trademark registration. Critics alleged potential conflicts of interest due to his family's involvement in related organizations. Wu asserted, "I have fought a good fight," expressing confidence that time would prove his innocence. He formally submitted his resignation to the TPP and the Legislative Yuan's secretariat, stating his intention to become a missionary.
Wu explained that he informed party chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) and secretary-general Chou Yu-hsiu (周榆修) of his resignation plans 10 days ago, receiving their understanding and support. The TPP will appoint Liu Shu-bin (劉書彬), a political science professor at Soochow University, as Wu's replacement.
Liu holds a doctorate in political science from the University of Cologne and specializes in German government and politics, EU integration, climate and energy governance, and international relations.
