TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW, 衛生福利部) announced adjustments to the opening hours of its press rooms starting Friday (Feb. 7) in response to budget cuts.
The Legislative Yuan (立法院) slashed the central government's budget, affecting electricity and water expenses by 10%, general affairs expenses by another 10%, and media policy and business promotion expenses by 60%.
Deputy Health Minister Lin Ching-yi (林靜儀) expressed plans to review the press room's hours for media convenience. Lin noted the significant reductions in public relations and media expenses, which necessitated budget adjustments. The press rooms will now close by 6 p.m. on weekdays and remain closed on holidays, with exceptions for special events, extending operating hours by two hours.
The Executive Yuan (行政院) also felt the impact of the budget cuts, recently terminating sign language translation services and restricting press room access without offering Wi-Fi. The Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) introduced 15 energy-saving measures, including no overtime on Fridays, a 20% reduction in lighting, and increased use of virtual meetings.
