TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Halifax International Security Forum debuted in Taipei (HFX Taipei) on Thursday (Feb. 20), marking its first venture outside North America. Forum President Peter van Praagh highlighted Taiwan's vibrant democracy while acknowledging the challenges it faces from neighboring countries' gray zone tactics.President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) also attended the forum.
More than 70 nations sent officials, experts, and scholars to the two-day forum in Taipei. Van Praagh hosted the opening press conference, emphasizing the symbolic partnership between Taiwan and the international security forum. He stated the world can witness the international community's support and friendship for Taiwan, and thanked United Microelectronics Corp (UMC, 聯華電子) founder Robert Tsao (曹興誠) for his backing.
President Lai addressed the complexities of the international landscape, emphasizing that the democratic allies must stand together against authoritarian regimes, establish a global "non-red supply chain,"(紅色供應鏈), and bring back peace amid a growing threat from People's Republic of China(PRC). Lai also appreciated Halifx's continuing support by inviting Taiwan to participate in the forum every year, reaffirming his commitment to maintain cross-straight stability and peace.
Tsao responded to media inquiries, stating Taiwan cannot predict the U.S. President Donald Trump's (川普) new perspective on the Russia-Urkrain war but can strive for internal unity to protect democracy.
Tsao also stressed Taiwan's need to declare unity and protect its democracy against the Chinese Communist Party's authoritarianism. He praised the forum for excluding authoritarian states like China and its willingness to include Taiwan, viewing it as a significant boost for Taiwan's international presence.
The Halifax International Security Forum was held in Nova Scotia, Canada last November, where former President Tsai Ing-wen was invited and delivered a speech.
