TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The U.S. Department of State remarked on Wednesday (Feb. 19) that the U.S. supports Taiwan's self-defense capabilities under the "Taiwan Relations Act" (臺灣關係法) and has no comment for its potential arms procurement reported by Reuters, according to the Central News Agency (CNA, 中央通訊社).
The Reuters report revealed anonymous sources who stated that the arms sales align with Taiwan's strategic aim to secure backing from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration. The sources added that this potential deal also comes as Taiwan seeks to bolster its defense capabilities amid increasing military pressure from China.
The report cited sources who said Taiwan's special defense budget focuses on precision munitions, air defense upgrades, command and control systems, reserve forces equipment, and anti-drone technology.
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) has not commented specifically on the possible procurement.
