TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday (Feb. 11) extended his deepest condolences following a tragic bus accident in Guatemala.

The incident, which occurred on Monday local time in Guatemala, resulted in at least 54 passenger fatalities after the bus plunged into a ravine, with half of its structure submerged in a river. In response, Guatemala President Bernardo Arevalo declared a national mourning period of three days to honor the victims.

Lai instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Guatemala (駐瓜地馬拉大使館) to convey condolences and support to the Guatemalan government.

Presidential Office (總統府) Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) confirmed these directives, emphasizing Taiwan's commitment to aiding Guatemala during this crisis.

The Taiwanese president also took to social media platform X to express solidarity, stating that "our hearts are with the victims' families and loved ones." His message reflected the sentiments of the Taiwanese people, who stand united with Guatemala in this time of sorrow.
