TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday (Feb. 5) warned that significant cuts and freezes to the central government's budget, exceeding 30%, could hinder Taiwan's ability to respond to international changes. He urged opposition parties to reassess these budget reductions, emphasizing that such actions would not serve the interests of the people or the nation.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) convened a meeting where spokesperson Han Ying (韓瑩) relayed President Lai's remarks. She noted that recent fluctuations in the international market have caused temporary disruptions to Taiwan's economy. President Lai stressed the importance of Taiwan's finding a favorable position amid rapidly changing global dynamics, contributing to regional prosperity, and upholding a rules-based international order.

President Lai also highlighted the necessity for Taiwan to maintain its national interests and core principles. He advocated a proactive approach, stating that Taiwan should be willing to "do more and help more" to gain leverage in international negotiations.
