TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Highway Bureau (公路局) announced on Thursday (Jan. 23) that starting March 1, citizens must pay NT$200 per hour to attend road safety courses. The courses, conducted at motor vehicle offices or by contracted entities, aim to reinforce traffic safety education and adhere to the user-pays principle.
Citizens can use the "Road Traffic Safety Lecture System" website (道路交通安全講習系統網站) to find and book classes from 46 contracted entities. The Highway Bureau ensures the fee covers venue, instructors, and materials, maintaining consistency with current self-funded standards.
"The Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act" (道路交通安全處罰條例) allows drivers with six demerit points within a year to apply for self-funded courses. Completing a 3-hour session can deduct two points. Since July 1, 2024, the revised act permits attending these courses twice a year instead of once.
Current regulations mandate road safety courses for drivers with six demerit points or those involved in DUI incidents within a year. The Highway Bureau warns that failing to attend without a valid reason results in an NT$1,800 fine. Drivers who delay for over six months risk having their licenses suspended.
