TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Chiayi at 12:17 a.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 21), causing scattered damage. Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) expressed gratitude to CPC Corporation (中油), Taiwan Power Company (台電), Taiwan Sugar Corporation (台糖), and Taiwan Water Corporation (台水) for their immediate inspections and repairs.
Aftershocks concentrated in Tainan, where some damage occurred. Premier Cho reported on Facebook that central ministries have assessed the situation, and local governments are addressing and accommodating the affected areas. He stated that most areas have returned to normal, with Taiwan Power's nuclear and thermal units operating smoothly and power restored to customers. The Water Resources Agency confirmed no reservoir issues, and Taiwan Water's supply remains stable. CPC Corporation reported normal conditions, and Taiwan Sugar reported no damage.
In transportation, a landslide blocked Lidao Rd. (利稻路) on Taiwan Provincial Highway 20 (台20線) in Haiduan Township (海端鄉), Taitung County. Clearance is expected by Tuesday afternoon. In Kaohsiung City's Jiasian District (甲仙區), sporadic rockfalls obstructed the Xi'an Mountain (錫安山) section of Taiwan Provincial Highway 29 (台29線), which is expected to reopen by noon Tuesday. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents in affected areas should stay informed about road conditions and emergency updates.
