TAIPEI (TVBS News) — China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO, 國台辦) spokesperson Chen Binhua (陳斌華) on Wednesday (Jan. 15) addressed concerns about Taiwanese residents moving to mainland China, emphasizing that the decision to study, work, live, or settle in China remains a personal choice for Taiwanese individuals. He stressed that the Chinese authorities welcome these moves, promising to process applications in accordance with laws and regulations.
Chen responded to media inquiries during a routine press conference, criticizing ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP, 民進黨) accusations, describing the claims as tactics of cognitive warfare and green terror. Chen reiterated China's commitment to providing better conditions and more opportunities for Taiwanese citizens who wish to pursue education, employment, or entrepreneurship on the mainland.
A recent documentary by influencer Pa Chiung (八炯) has sparked public interest by highlighting China's use of subsidies and loan access to attract Taiwanese citizens to apply for Chinese identification cards. This tactic has drawn significant attention, raising concerns about potential risks and restrictions.
National security officials have warned that holding a Chinese ID card could expose Taiwanese individuals to risks and limitations. They cautioned that this situation might serve as a breach for China's extraterritorial jurisdiction, increasing national security threats.
