TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Animal Protection Office (台北市動物保護處) warned on Tuesday (Dec. 31) that fireworks could frighten pets and cause them to flee their home. The office advised pet owners to secure windows and doors and to use leashes when taking pets outside.
The Animal Protection Office emphasized the dangers of fireworks, noting that past data shows pets often go missing due to the loud explosions. This year, authorities have issued 190 fines for pets found wandering or unleashed, with 172 involving dogs, 15 cats, and three other animals.
In Neihu District (內湖區), a resident recently found a mixed-breed dog and called the animal protection hotline. Officials helped reunite the dog with its owner, who received an NT$3,000 fine. Meanwhile, in Wenshan District (文山區), rescuers found a gray British Shorthair cat hiding in a gutter after a resident heard its meows. The owner retrieved the cat through microchip registration.
The office urged pet owners to use leashes and carriers outdoors and ensure their homes are secure to prevent pets from escaping due to sudden noises. Violating the Animal Protection Act (動物保護法) or Taipei City regulations can result in fines ranging from NT$3,000 to NT$15,000.
