KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — The Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Office (高雄市動物保護處) announced Monday (Dec. 16) that its diverse adoption channels have successfully found homes for 1,735 stray dogs, boosting the adoption rate to 75%, a 17% increase from last year. The office implemented continuous adoption measures yearly to alleviate pressure on public shelters and enhance the animals' approachability.
The office collaborated with 40 pet businesses, resulting in the annual adoption of over 100 stray animals. They also organized more than 30 adoption events with renowned companies and animal protection groups, leading to the successful adoption of 55 dogs and 10 cats. Yeh Kun-sung (葉坤松), the office's director, highlighted these efforts in a recent statement.
In partnership with the Animal Protection Association (社團法人中華民國保護動物協會), the office trained working dogs to deter monkeys. These trained dogs, adopted by farms and orchards, help protect agricultural produce from wildlife damage, reaching a milestone of 100 adoptions this year. Additionally, events encouraged first-time pet owners to take the initial step in adoption, attracting 350 participants with a 90% adoption rate.
Yeh announced that the final pet adoption event in 2024 will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mega City Kaohsiung's first-floor plaza. The office invites the public to attend and meet their potential new companions.
