TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) is rallying to secure the release of its chairman, Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), after the Taipei District Court (台北地院) set bail at NT$30 million. TPP caucus whip Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) announced on Friday that the party is determined to gather the necessary funds.
Huang expressed gratitude for the support Ko has received and acknowledged the emotional toll of the legal process. He emphasized the party's resolve to free Ko, noting the collective relief among members upon learning of the court's decision. The TPP is in ongoing communication with Ko's wife, Peggy Chen (陳佩琪), recognizing the financial strain on Ko's family. Huang reassured supporters, stating, "We will definitely bring out the chairman today."
Addressing online fundraising efforts by supporters, Huang clarified that Ko maintains a strict separation between public and private funds. Despite facing allegations related to public affairs, Ko remains committed to not burdening his supporters financially.
The party is determined to secure the necessary funds without compromising principles. Ko, detained for 113 days over charges involving land use and political donations, awaits release alongside other detained individuals.
