TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Kyushu Economic Research Center (九州經濟調查協會) on Tuesday (Dec. 24) estimated that TSMC (台積電) will drive an economic benefit of approximately 23 trillion yen in Japan's Kyushu region, Yamaguchi Prefecture (山口縣), and Okinawa Prefecture (沖繩縣) from 2021 to 2030. This figure marks a 3 trillion yen increase from last year's estimate.
The Yomiuri Shimbun (讀賣新聞) reported that the association initially projected a 10-year economic benefit of about 20 trillion yen by the end of 2023. The revised estimate includes semiconductor-related investments from local companies, which contributed to the upward adjustment. The association used the same estimation method as before, focusing on investments exceeding 100 million yen and the positive effects of increased production activities and employment on consumption.
The new projection considers additional factors, such as local enterprises receiving assistance from major regional banks to construct new factories. This adjustment raised the estimated economic benefit to 23 trillion yen, compared to the previous 20 trillion yen. TSMC's investment in Kumamoto Prefecture (熊本縣) is expected to generate over 13 trillion yen in economic benefits, accounting for about 60% of the total. This impact stems from TSMC's factory in Kikuyo Town (菊陽町) and future expansions, along with major investments like Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing.
Additionally, Nagasaki Prefecture (長崎縣) will see an economic benefit of approximately 2.5 trillion yen, while Fukuoka Prefecture (福岡縣), home to factories like Rohm Semiconductor Group (羅姆半導體集團), will gain about 2.1 trillion yen.
