TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) Chairman C.C. Wei (魏哲家) on Monday (Dec. 16) emphasized Taiwan's potential to leverage its AI advantages. Speaking at the National Science and Technology Conference (全國科學技術會議), Wei highlighted the critical role of quality chips in AI development.
The conference, held every four years by the Executive Yuan, focuses on smart technology, innovative economy, balanced society, and net-zero sustainability. Wei, delivering the opening remarks, humorously remarked that people assume a TSMC chairman is knowledgeable, joking, "it only applies when Morris Chang was in charge," which drew laughter from the audience.
Wei noted that recent interactions with clients have centered on AI and its applications. He pointed out Taiwan's strengths in chip design and packaging technology. Additionally, Wei shared insights from discussions with some of the world's wealthiest individuals, who believe multifunctional robots, not cars, represent the future, emphasizing the need for chip support.
He also identified drone applications as a promising direction for Taiwan's future development. Wei revealed that TSMC has used AI technology to boost work efficiency, adding billions in profit annually. He suggested that the nation could similarly harness AI for development.
