TAIPEI (TVBS News) — C. C. Wei (魏哲家), the chairman and CEO of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電), highlighted the significance of multifunctional robots and drones for the nation's future on Monday (Dec. 16). Taiwan's commitment to innovation took center stage during the 12th National Science and Technology Conference (全國科學技術會議), where Wei cited a conversation with "the richest guy in the world" who viewed multifunctional robots, rather than cars, as the future focus.
He emphasized Taiwan's strengths in AI, including design firms, chip manufacturing, packaging testing, and data centers. Sepaking at the same event, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) underscored the need for Taiwan to strengthen its "5+2 innovative industries plan" and six core strategic industries in the face of AI's rapid rise. Lai announced a significant increase in next year's technology budget to NT$196.5 billion, up NT$7.7 billion from this year, reflecting Taiwan's emphasis on the tech sector.
Minister Without Portfolio and Minister of the National Science and Technology Council, Wu Cheng-wen (吳誠文), stated that the conference focuses on medium — and long-term technological development, aligning with the "Five Trusted Industry Sectors." Wu mentioned plans to advance AI industrialization and industry AI integration, foster balanced regional development, and nurture cross-disciplinary talent for national prosperity. As Taiwan navigates these challenges, the conference sets a strategic path for sustainable growth and innovation.
